A kilometre north of the village, on the Santa Bárbara hill above the river, stand the bare ruins of the Castelo Velho — the 'old castle'. Built in the Islamic period, between the 8th and 9th centuries, and abandoned by the 11th or 12th, it long predates the castle in the village and marks how old this river frontier really is.
Little is left but low walls and footings, yet the setting is the reward: a quiet hilltop with sweeping views over a curve of the Guadiana and the open country of the Baixo Guadiana, reached by a short walk or drive from town. For anyone drawn to landscape and deep history over polished monuments, it is a contemplative stop.
