Stone bridge across the Tâmega in the centre of Amarante, completed in 1790 to replace an earlier bridge swept away by the 1763 flood. Famously held by Portuguese forces against Marshal Soult's French troops for two weeks in May 1809 — the bridge is both monument and battlefield.
