Praia da Marinha is the Algarve's exhibit A: a long cove under cathedral cliffs whose freestanding stacks and famous double arch — the 'M rock' — have carried it onto every list of Europe's and the world's great beaches, Michelin stars for sand included.
The water is the secret the photographs undersell: rock reefs at both ends make Marinha the area's premier easy snorkel, with bream, wrasse and octopus working the pillars. A long stairway descends from the clifftop car park (the iconic arch view is from the cliff path west of the stairs — go before you descend); lifeguards and a seasonal café serve the sand below.
It anchors the eastern end of the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, fifteen minutes' drive or a glorious 2.5-hour walk from Benagil.
