The Sameiro Sanctuary — the Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Sameiro — stands on a hilltop above Braga, a vast white sanctuary that is one of the most important Marian shrines in Portugal.
Where the nearby Bom Jesus impresses through Baroque artistry, Sameiro impresses through scale and white neoclassical grandeur. Built from 1863 onwards, with work continuing well into the twentieth century, the great basilica has a soaring dome, visible for miles around, and is large enough to hold enormous gatherings of pilgrims. The interior holds a revered statue of Our Lady.
The sanctuary draws large crowds on the major Marian feast days, and at any time it offers panoramic views over Braga and the surrounding country. Lying close to Bom Jesus do Monte, it is naturally combined with it in a visit to the hills above the city.

The vast white basilica, in a neoclassical style, has a soaring dome and can hold enormous numbers of pilgrims. It is one of the most important Marian sanctuaries in Portugal, and has hosted major religious events, including a visit by Pope John Paul II.
