Pedro's revenge, and his crowning of her corpse, made the lovers immortal; Camões set her death by these waters.
The romantic park across the Mondego from the old town gathers the legend's stations: the Fonte dos Amores and the Fonte das Lágrimas — the spring said to have risen from Inês's tears, its red algae her blood — a medieval canal, giant sequoias and centuries-old exotic trees, a 19th-century neo-Gothic ruin and the gardens of the 18th-century palace, now a hotel.
