The Chapel of the Apparitions — the Capelinha das Aparições — is the small chapel at the very heart of the Sanctuary of Fátima, and the spiritual centre of the whole site.
The chapel stands on the spot where, by tradition, the apparitions of 1917 took place. It is simple and modern in form, set in the open, surrounded by a wide space that allows large numbers of pilgrims to gather for prayer, Mass and processions. For many visitors, this small chapel — rather than the great basilicas around it — is the most moving place in Fátima.
The chapel is the focus of the daily life of the sanctuary, with services and the praying of the rosary, often in several languages. Nearby, pilgrims light candles and draw water from a spring. Some approach the chapel along the marble pathway on their knees, in an act of devotion. It is freely open, day and night.
