The Forte de São João do Arade stands where the river meets the sea, a compact 17th-century fort raised to guard the Arade estuary against pirates and privateers alongside its twin, the Forte de Santa Catarina, on the Portimão bank opposite.
Later restored and turned into a private residence — once owned by the poet Coelho de Carvalho, who added a romantic tower — it is not generally open inside, but its position is the draw: squat walls on the rocks at the end of Praia da Angrinha, photographed from the riverfront and from every boat entering the marina. It anchors the view that defines Ferragudo from the water.
