The Penha Sanctuary is regarded as the natural balcony of Guimarães, as it stands on the highest point above the city. The hilltop is shaped by a remarkable landscape of granite boulders, in which caves and narrow passages have been formed, and much of it is covered by pine and eucalyptus woodland.
At the summit, a twentieth-century sanctuary church is found, built in a sober modern style and surrounded by gardens and shaded picnic areas. From several points along the hill, wide panoramic views are enjoyed over Guimarães and, on clear days, far across the Minho countryside. Walking paths are laid out among the rocks, and small grottoes can be explored on foot.
The hill is reached in two ways. A winding road climbs to the top, while a cable car is also operated from the edge of the city, offering a scenic ascent above the rooftops. Because of its open spaces and fresh air, the Penha is valued by visitors and local families alike as a place to relax away from the historic center.
