The Church of Santa Maria stands on the Praça de Santa Maria, the central square of Óbidos, at the foot of Rua Direita. It is the main church of the town and one of its most rewarding interiors.
A church has stood on this site since the Middle Ages, but the building seen today results from a thorough reconstruction in the sixteenth century, carried out from 1571 under the patronage of Queen Catherine of Austria. The result blends Manueline, Renaissance, Mannerist and Baroque elements, with a Mannerist portal on the exterior.
Inside, the walls are lined from top to bottom with seventeenth-century blue-and-white azulejos, beneath a painted wooden ceiling — one of the most striking decorative ensembles of its kind in Portugal. The church holds the Renaissance tomb of João de Noronha, a masterpiece of Portuguese tomb sculpture, and paintings by Josefa de Óbidos, the celebrated seventeenth-century painter associated with the town.

History & context
The origins of the church reach back to the Middle Ages. By around 1570 the building was in a ruinous state, and from 15 August 1571 it was completely rebuilt under the patronage of Queen Catherine of Austria, giving the church its present form. A century later it was redecorated in the Baroque taste, with the azulejos, painted ceiling and canvases of the naves. The church holds the Renaissance tomb of João de Noronha and paintings by Josefa de Óbidos, including work tied to Saint Catherine.
