The Porta da Vila is the main gate into the walled town of Óbidos and, for most visitors, the first encounter with it. It is a double-gated structure: two arched portals with a sheltered space between them.
What makes the gate memorable is hidden inside. Between the two arches is a small oratory-chapel, dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Piedade, the patron of the town. Its balcony is lined with blue-and-white azulejo panels from the eighteenth century, depicting the Passion of Christ, and the ceiling is painted with a representation of the crown of thorns. An inscription dedicated to the Virgin completes the scene.
The Porta da Vila became the principal entrance to Óbidos in the late fourteenth century, replacing an earlier southern gate. It opens directly onto Rua Direita, the main street that runs through the town up to the castle. The gate can be admired from below and also seen from above by those walking the town walls.
