The Museu de Portimão is the Algarve's best museum and the city's honest mirror: installed in the former Feu Hermanos sardine-canning factory on the Arade riverfront, it won the Council of Europe Museum Prize in 2010 for the way it tells a working town's story.
The heart of the visit is the canning line itself — machinery, workstations and soundscape recreated where they stood, following the sardine from quay to sealed tin and the lives of the women who worked the line. Around it run the river's archaeology, from prehistoric Alcalar to Roman fish-salting and underwater finds from the bay.
Hours shift seasonally (Tue afternoons, Wed–Sun daytime; August opens evenings instead) and the ticket is famously modest — about €3, with a combined option adding the Alcalar megaliths.
