The Ribeira is the historic heart of Porto — the old riverside quarter that spreads along the bank of the Douro and climbs the hillside behind it. It is the centrepiece of the city's UNESCO World Heritage area.
This is one of the oldest parts of Porto, and walking its streets is a step back in time. Tall, colourful houses are stacked tightly along narrow, steep lanes that open suddenly onto the river. The quayside, the Cais da Ribeira, is lined with cafés and restaurants and looks across the Douro to the port wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia.
The district keeps traces of medieval Porto, including stretches of the old Fernandine walls and the Casa do Infante, the city's oldest building. The Ribeira is at its best in the late afternoon and at sunset, when the light catches the houses and the Dom Luís I Bridge, and the riverside fills with life.
