Silves Cathedral, known as the Sé, stands just below the castle and is regarded as the foremost Gothic building in the Algarve. It was raised on the site of the great mosque of the Islamic city, a deliberate mark of the change of power after the Reconquest, and it is built from the same red sandstone that gives the castle its colour.
The exterior is austere, dominated by a simple rose window and a pointed Gothic portal whose form is often compared with that of the Monastery of Batalha. Inside, a three-aisled nave leads to a transept and to chapels at the east end, where Gothic ribbed vaulting is set above medieval tombs. Among them are the resting places of crusader knights and bishops who governed the town in the centuries after 1249.
The building carries the marks of its long history. The 1755 earthquake caused damage that was repaired in a later Baroque manner, so the side altars and parts of the structure blend with the predominant Gothic. For a quiet half hour away from the climb to the castle, the cathedral rewards an unhurried look.

History & context
Silves became a bishopric soon after the first conquest of 1189, but the cathedral itself was begun only after the definitive Christian conquest of 1249, under King Afonso III, with major work continuing into the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. It remained the seat of the diocese until the sixteenth century, when the bishopric was transferred to Faro as the silting of the Arade reduced the importance of Silves. The 1755 earthquake led to repairs in the Baroque taste, and the building was later classified as a National Monument.
