Valverde Sintra Palácio de Seteais occupies one of the most historically significant buildings in Sintra — an 18th-century neoclassical palace built between 1783 and 1787 by the Dutch consul-general Daniel Gildemeester. The palace's defining feature, a freestanding Triumphal Arch in the cobbled forecourt, was added in 1802 by Marquês de Marialva to mark a visit by the Portuguese royal family. The arch and the symmetrical façades remain among the finest examples of Portuguese neoclassicism.
The palace is inseparable from a key moment in European history: in August 1808, during the Peninsular War, French Marshal Junot signed the Convention of Sintra here, agreeing to evacuate Portugal under terms negotiated with the British army led by Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington). The room where the document was signed has been preserved.
Today the property operates as a 30-room boutique hotel — small by Sintra standards, ensuring an intimate experience. The interior has been carefully restored to preserve original frescoes (some attributed to Jean Pillement and Nicolas-Louis-Albert Delerive), period furniture, antique azulejo panels, and the original neoclassical proportions. The Salão Nobre (main reception hall) and the upper gallery are particularly notable.
The 10-hectare gardens are the second great asset. Topiary hedges, a small lake, mature cedars, and a long axis leading to a viewpoint over the valley have been maintained in 18th-century style. The view from the garden's western edge takes in Pena Palace on the opposite ridge — at sunset, one of the most photographed vistas in Sintra.
The hotel restaurant serves contemporary Portuguese cuisine in a frescoed dining room with garden views. A spa, library lounge, and small wedding venue complete the facilities. Booking through Gotoo only.

Preguntas frecuentes
How does Valverde Seteais compare to Penha Longa Resort?
Different experiences for different travellers. Seteais is a small 30-room boutique palace hotel — intimate, historic, ideal for romantic stays and short trips. Penha Longa is a 194-room destination resort with two golf courses and a spa — better for longer stays, families, or golf-focused trips. Seteais is closer to Sintra Vila (2.5 km vs 8 km) and has the more dramatic historic-palace atmosphere; Penha Longa has more facilities and more dining options.
How do I get from the hotel to Sintra and Pena Palace?
The hotel is 2.5 km from Sintra Vila — a 5-minute drive or a pleasant 30-minute walk downhill through the forest road. Pena Palace is 4 km from the hotel (10 min drive). The hotel runs scheduled shuttles to Sintra Vila during the day and offers concierge-arranged transfers for full-day visits to Pena, Quinta da Regaleira, Cabo da Roca, and Cascais.
Is the hotel open to non-guests for dinner or tea?
Yes — both the restaurant and the salon (afternoon tea) welcome non-guests by reservation. Dinner reservations are recommended 3–5 days in advance, especially for the Salão Nobre seating. Afternoon tea (served from 15:00–17:30) is a popular Sintra experience even for travellers not staying at the hotel.
Can the hotel be booked for weddings or events?
Yes. The palace is a popular wedding venue with capacity for around 80–120 guests for seated events. The Triumphal Arch makes a dramatic ceremony backdrop. Garden cocktails and ballroom receptions can be combined. Wedding packages are tailored — contact the hotel concierge through Gotoo for details.
