The Igreja da Misericórdia is widely considered the most important Renaissance building in the Algarve, and one of the highlights of any visit to Tavira. It stands in the old town, on the rising ground between the main square and the castle.
The church was built in the mid-sixteenth century, the work of the master stonemason André Pilarte, a Tavira man who also worked on the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon. Its carved stone portal is the signature feature: above the doorway, a statue of Our Lady of Mercy is set in a niche, flanked by figures of Saint Peter and Saint Paul and by the arms of Portugal and of Tavira.
Inside, three naves rest on Renaissance columns beneath a wooden ceiling. The walls are lined with large panels of blue-and-white azulejos, dated to the eighteenth century, which depict the works of mercy, while the main chapel holds a gilded Baroque altarpiece. An adjoining museum and a climb to the bell tower complete the visit.

History & context
The Santa Casa da Misericórdia, a charitable brotherhood, was established in Tavira in the early sixteenth century. In 1541 the stonemason André Pilarte was commissioned to build its church, and the work was completed around 1551. The building is the leading example of Renaissance architecture in the Algarve, its portal modelled on Italian engravings of the period. The main altarpiece was added in the Baroque taste in the eighteenth century, and the azulejo panels of the works of mercy date from the same century.
