The Ilha de Tavira is the island that gives the town its beaches. It is one of the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a long, low strip of sand and dune that separates the calm lagoon from the open Atlantic.
The island has no road connection; it is reached only by ferry, with crossings from the centre of Tavira and from the Quatro Águas pier a short way east of the town. The trip is short and runs through the shallow, jade-coloured waters of the lagoon, past fishing boats and salt marsh where herons and other birds are seen.
Once ashore, the beach stretches for many kilometres. Near the landing there are restaurants, bars and sunbeds for rent, but a walk of only ten or fifteen minutes leads to long, near-empty stretches of sand. Protected by its nature-reserve status, the island remains largely undeveloped, a contrast to the built-up coast elsewhere in the Algarve.

History & context
The Ilha de Tavira forms part of the Ria Formosa, a system of lagoons, marshes and barrier islands along the eastern Algarve coast that was classified as a Natural Park in 1987. The barrier islands are naturally shifting formations of sand, and their protection has kept the Ilha de Tavira free of the dense development seen on much of the Algarve shoreline. The island has long been linked to local fishing and, historically, to tuna fishing in the surrounding waters.
