Tavira Castle stands on the highest ground of the old town, its walls and towers rising above the whitewashed houses and the river below. Although partly in ruins, it remains one of the town's defining landmarks and one of the most rewarding free visits in Tavira.
The fortress is of Moorish origin, raised when Tavira — then at-Tabira — was an important town of the Islamic Algarve. After the Christian conquest in the thirteenth century, the castle passed to the Order of Santiago, and its walls were later reinforced under King Dinis as a defence against coastal raids. The great earthquake of 1755 severely damaged the structure, and much was never rebuilt.
Within the walls, a quiet garden has been laid out, planted with flowers and shaded corners. Visitors climb the surviving ramparts for wide views over the rooftops of Tavira, the Gilão river and, beyond, the lagoons of the Ria Formosa stretching towards the sea.

History & context
The castle hill at Tavira has been occupied since antiquity — an archaeological dig in 1997 revealed a Phoenician wall from the eighth century BC. Under Islamic rule the town, known as at-Tabira, was fortified during the Almoravid and Almohad periods. Portuguese forces took the castle in 1242, after which it was held by the Order of Santiago. King Dinis repaired and strengthened the walls around the turn of the fourteenth century. The fortress lost military importance in later centuries and was badly damaged by the 1755 earthquake; it was classified as a National Monument in 2014.
