The church is among the oldest sights in Belmonte. It is thought to have its origin around 1240, when Maria Gil Cabral had a chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade built on the site. Around 1433, the Capela dos Cabrais — the Cabral chapel — was added by the parents of Pedro Álvares Cabral, to receive the tombs of illustrious members of the family. Because the church lay on a pilgrimage route towards Santiago de Compostela, it took the name of Santiago.
