The bookshop opened in its present building in 1906, the work of the Lello brothers, José and António, who had been booksellers since the late nineteenth century. The building, designed by the engineer Francisco Xavier Esteves, blends neo-Gothic architecture with Art Nouveau detail. Inside, the eye is drawn to the curving staircase — often painted red — the carved woodwork, and the large stained-glass skylight overhead.

The Lello bookselling business traces back to 1881, when José Pinto de Sousa Lello opened his first bookshop in Porto.
