The Cruz de Portugal is a carved stone cross standing roughly three metres high, sheltered today within a small garden a short way outside the historic centre of Silves. It is counted among the finest pieces of Manueline, or late-Gothic, sculpture to survive in the Algarve.
The cross is worked on both faces. One side shows the Crucifixion of Christ, while the other presents a Pietà, the Virgin Mary holding the body of her son. The detail of the carving, with its delicate tracery and figures, sets the monument apart from the plainer crosses found elsewhere in the region.
The cross is cut from limestone rather than the local red sandstone, which has long suggested to historians that it was made outside the Algarve, perhaps in the Lisbon area, and brought to Silves. It stood in different parts of the town over the centuries before being placed in its present garden setting. Because it lies away from the main climb to the castle, it is often missed, yet it repays the short detour.

The cross is generally dated to the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, the period of the Manueline style that takes its name from King Manuel I. Tradition holds that it was given to Silves by King Manuel I around the time of his visit in 1499, in recognition of the town having received the body of King João II before its transfer onward. The limestone, foreign to the Algarve, supports the idea of an origin outside the region. The monument was moved several times within Silves before reaching its current location.
