Viseu is the capital of the Dão wine region, between the mountains of central Portugal. Often voted one of the best places to live in the country, it has a lovely granite old town, green parks and an excellent museum. It is a good base for wine tours and for the Serra da Estrela.
What to see
The heart of the old town is the Adro da Sé, where the granite cathedral faces the baroque Misericórdia church. Next to the cathedral, the Grão Vasco Museum shows the work of Portugal's great Renaissance painter. Walk through the Porta do Soar, a gate in the old walls, down to the Rossio and its large tile panels. Relax in Fontelo park, and see the Cava de Viriato, a huge earthwork linked to the legend of the Lusitanian hero Viriatus.
