Lisbon spreads over seven hills on the north bank of the River Tagus, close to where the river meets the Atlantic. It is a city of steep streets and old trams, tiled façades and wide viewpoints, where historic neighbourhoods sit next to riverside promenades and modern museums.

What to see

In Belém, the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower recall the age of the Portuguese voyages; both are UNESCO World Heritage. In the centre, walk from Praça do Comércio through the Baixa and up to São Jorge Castle, then lose yourself in the lanes of Alfama, the oldest quarter. End the day at a viewpoint such as the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte. For something different, the Oceanário in Parque das Nações is one of Europe's largest aquariums.

What to eat

Try a warm pastel de nata with cinnamon, a glass of ginjinha at a tiny counter in Rossio, and, in summer, grilled sardines and a plate of snails in a local tasca. Seafood and bacalhau are everywhere.
