Óbidos Castle – A Medieval Jewel in Portugal

Origins of Óbidos Castle
The hill has been inhabited since Roman times, once known as Eburobrittium. Later, during Muslim rule, the fortifications were expanded, shaping the structure that would eventually become Óbidos Castle.
The Christian Reconquest
In 1148, King Afonso Henriques captured Óbidos, integrating it into the new defensive line of central Portugal. Over time, King Dinis and Queen Isabel of Aragon reinforced the walls and adapted interior structures into a palace.
Óbidos — The Town of Queens
From 1210 onward, Óbidos was traditionally offered as a wedding gift to Portuguese queens. This royal patronage influenced the construction of churches, convents and civic buildings, shaping the unique character of the walled town.

Walls & Ramparts
The polygonal walls stretch for about 1.5 km. Walking the perimeter offers open views over vineyards and the Atlantic ridge. The path has no guardrails, so caution is required.
Main Gate — Porta da Vila
The decorated entrance features 18th-century blue-and-white azulejos and a balcony-chapel honouring Our Lady of Piety, symbolising the town’s religious heritage.
Keep Tower & Palace (Now a Pousada)
The keep dominates the enclosure, while the old palace area now operates as the Pousada Castelo de Óbidos, offering some of the best panoramic views in the region.

Every summer, the Medieval Market transforms the town into a living 13th-century village with costumes, performances, food stalls and medieval crafts. It’s one of Portugal’s most immersive historical events.

Óbidos is about 85 km from Lisbon (≈1 hour via A8). Buses depart from Campo Grande, but a private transfer offers comfort, luggage flexibility and direct access to nearby attractions like Nazaré or Alcobaça.

The village and exterior castle areas are free to explore. Some towers and exhibitions may have small entrance fees, usually between 09:00–18:00, depending on season.
