The Castle of Abrantes stands at the highest point of the town and was built to guard the Tagus line in the early centuries of the Portuguese kingdom. From the walls and the keep you look out over the river, the Ribatejo plains and, on clear days, the hills of the Beira.
Inside the walls are the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo, with the tombs of the Almeida family, and the castle garden. Allow about an hour and a half to see everything, and combine it with a walk down through the historic centre.
Highlights
- Panoramic views over the Tagus valley
- Keep and walls of the medieval castle
- Church of Santa Maria do Castelo inside the walls
- Easy to combine with the historic centre and the MIAA museum
