Praia dos Pescadores is where Armação de Pêra still earns its name. Below the seafront fort, painted wooden boats sit on the sand between the bathers, nets drying on the rails, and at dawn the small fleet works the bay much as it always has.
From the adjoining slip and the town's jetty, the modern trade also leaves: boat trips west to the Galé sea caves and the famous Benagil grotto, dolphin-watching RIBs, and lazy coastal cruises. It makes the harbour the best of both worlds — a genuine fishermen's beach in the centre of a resort, with fresh fish landed steps from the restaurants that cook it.
Stand here at first light, before the parasols, and the resort falls away to reveal the fishing village underneath.
