Belmonte is a historic village on a hill between the Serra da Estrela and the Spanish border. It was the home of the Cabral family, and Pedro Álvares Cabral, who arrived in Brazil in 1500, was born here. Belmonte is also famous for its crypto-Jewish community, which kept its faith in secret for nearly five centuries after the Inquisition and only returned to open practice in the 20th century.
