Castro Marim sits on a hill above the Guadiana, looking across the river to Spain. Once the first headquarters of the Order of Christ, it is now a peaceful little town of white houses, surrounded by salt pans and marshes where flamingos and storks feed. Its coast, with Altura and Praia Verde, has some of the calmest, warmest beaches in the Algarve.
What to see
Climb to the castle for wide views over the river, the salt pans and Spain, and continue to the São Sebastião fort on the opposite hill. Walk or cycle through the Castro Marim salt marsh nature reserve, one of the best places in Portugal to see flamingos. At the end of August, the medieval festival fills the castle with knights, markets and music. Then head for the sea at Praia Verde and Altura, long sandy beaches backed by pine woods.
