The Jardim Botânico is the green counterpart of the university: founded in 1772 in the Pombaline reforms to teach botany and medicine, and grown since into thirteen hectares of terraces folding down the hillside below the aqueduct of São Sebastião.
The formal heart — the great central fountain ringed by clipped box and statuary — opens onto avenues of centenary trees, collections from the old Portuguese tropics, a bamboo forest, and the restored 19th-century Estufa Grande, the iron-and-glass tropical greenhouse. Peacocks patrol; students read on the benches; the city noise stays outside the gates.
Entry to the garden is free (the greenhouse charges a small fee), and it makes the perfect decompression after the university's crowds — ten minutes' walk and a world away.
