Covilhã climbs the eastern slopes of the Serra da Estrela, mainland Portugal's highest mountain range. For centuries it was the country's wool and textile capital; today its old factories house a university, and its steep streets are full of colourful murals. It is the closest city to the ski slopes and the summit of Torre.
Drive up to Penhas da Saúde and on to the Serra da Estrela plateau, with glacial lakes, granite boulders and, in winter, snow. In town, visit the Wool Museum, set in the old Royal Textile Factory inside the University of Beira Interior. Walk the historic centre to find the street art of the WOOL festival, and see the church of Santa Maria with its tiled façade.
Try Serra da Estrela cheese, creamy enough to eat with a spoon, roast mountain lamb, and cherovia doce, a local sweet made with parsnip. Add chestnuts, mountain honey and wines from the Beira Interior.
Seia is on the other side of the mountain, Guarda 40 minutes north, and the historic villages of Belmonte and Sortelha are close by.
