Plan your visit: the sights of Ourém, what to eat and where to stay.
Ourém has two faces. Down below is the modern town, and on a steep hill above it stands the old medieval village, walled and quiet, with a castle and a rare Gothic palace built by the 4th Count of Ourém in the 15th century. The municipality also includes Fátima, one of the world's great Marian shrines, just 15 minutes away.
Walk up the cobbled streets of the medieval village to the castle and Counts' Palace, with sweeping views over the countryside. Visit the collegiate church, where the Count's Gothic tomb lies in the crypt, and the municipal museum in the lower town. Nature lovers should see the dinosaur footprints of the Serra de Aire, one of the longest sauropod trackways in the world, and cool off at Agroal, a river beach with clear spring water.
Ourém has its own wine, Medieval de Ourém, a light red made by fermenting red and white grapes together, a tradition of the region's monks. Pair it with roast kid from the Serra de Aire hills.
Fátima is 15 minutes away, Tomar 25 minutes, and Batalha and Leiria about 30 minutes.
