The Fortaleza de Santa Catarina has watched the Arade since 1621, built under Filipe III to close the river against corsairs and to answer Ferragudo's São João fort across the water.
What survives is essentially a belvedere with history: ramparts and a small chapel above the river mouth, reached by a short climb from the marina or the eastern end of Praia da Rocha. The terraces give the area's best free panorama — the full sweep of the beach one way, the marina and Ferragudo's white pyramid of houses the other — and a kiosk café keeps the watch supplied.
