The Dom Luís I Bridge is the great iron bridge over the Douro, and one of the defining images of Porto. It links the Ribeira, on the Porto side, with Vila Nova de Gaia and its port wine cellars on the opposite bank.
The bridge was built between 1881 and 1886. It is often mistaken for the work of Gustave Eiffel, but it was in fact designed by Théophile Seyrig, a former partner of Eiffel who had earlier worked on the nearby Maria Pia railway bridge. Its great arch spans around 172 metres, and when it opened it was among the longest of its kind in the world.
The bridge has two decks. The upper deck, about 45 metres above the river, now carries the Porto Metro and a pedestrian walkway, with sweeping views over the city, the river and the rooftops. The lower deck carries road traffic and pedestrians at quayside level. Walking the upper deck, especially at sunset, is one of the most rewarding experiences in Porto.
