Vila Viçosa was the seat of the Dukes of Braganza, the family that became Portugal's last royal dynasty. Its long marble palace faces a huge square, and the whole town, from pavements to doorways, is made of local marble. Elegant and quiet, it is one of the most beautiful towns in the Alentejo.
What to see
Visit the Ducal Palace, with its royal apartments, kitchens and collections, on the Terreiro do Paço. Inside the walls of the castle are museums of hunting and archaeology. The church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, patron of Portugal, stands nearby. Look for the Porta dos Nós, a Manueline gate carved with knots, the symbol of the Braganzas.
