Doces de amêndoa e figo — Alcoutim

Doces de amêndoa e figo

Dessert 📍 Alcoutim

The hills behind Alcoutim grow almonds, figs and carob on dry ground, and the region's sweets make the most of all three. Almond and dried fig are ground and bound with sugar and cinnamon into dense morgados, little fig-and-almond cakes and marzipan-like sweets that close a meal across the eastern Algarve.

Rich, very sweet and meant for small bites with coffee or a glass of medronho, they belong to the same dry-land harvest that has fed this country for centuries. Sold in village shops and markets, they are the natural sweet souvenir of an Alcoutim visit.
