Arraiolos travel guide & FAQ

Arraiolos travel guide

Arraiolos is a small village of white houses with blue trim, 20 minutes north of Évora. On the hill above it stands one of the few circular castles in Portugal. The village is known everywhere for the Arraiolos rugs, wool rugs embroidered by hand in cross stitch since the 17th century, still made and sold in workshops along the main street.

What to see

Walk up to the castle, whose round walls enclose the Salvador church, and enjoy the view over the plains. Learn how the rugs are made at the Rug Interpretation Centre on the main square, then visit the workshops to watch the embroiderers. Just outside the village, the Lóios convent, now a pousada, has a fine church and cloister.

What to eat

Try empadas de Arraiolos, small pies filled with meat, a local tradition. Pair the creamy Évora cheese with a glass of Alentejo wine.
