Barcelos, on the River Cávado in the Minho, is the home of the legend of the rooster, now the unofficial symbol of Portugal. It is a lively market town with a medieval centre and a long tradition of pottery and crafts. It is also a stop on the Portuguese Camino de Santiago.
What to see
Come on a Thursday for the market on the Campo da República, one of the largest in Portugal, with produce, crafts and ceramic roosters. By the river, the ruined palace of the Counts houses the open-air Archaeological Museum, home of the stone cross linked to the rooster legend. Cross the medieval bridge, see the Romanesque-Gothic parish church and the baroque round church of Bom Jesus da Cruz, and visit the Pottery Museum.

Try galo assado, roast cockerel, the town's signature dish, and papas de sarrabulho in winter. For dessert, the local rosquilhas, ring-shaped biscuits. Drink a Vinho Verde.
