    Walk the promenade along the beaches and past the casino. Visit the Ethnography Museum to learn about the poveiro fishermen and their siglas. See the 18th-century fortress by the harbour and the baroque parish church. Ten minutes inland, the Romanesque church of São Pedro de Rates is one of the oldest in Portugal and a stop on the Camino de Santiago.

    Try pescada à poveira, hake with potatoes and a garlic-paprika sauce, grilled sardines and arroz de marisco. At Christmas, the local rabanadas are made with a special sweet bread. Drink a Vinho Verde.
