Vila do Conde is a destination in Portugal, about 360 km from Lisbon Airport.
Plan your visit: the sights of Vila do Conde, what to eat and where to stay.
Vila do Conde sits at the mouth of the River Ave, just north of Porto. Its shipyards built many of the caravels and naus of the Age of Discovery, and its convent of Santa Clara still dominates the town from the hill. Today it is a calm seaside town with long beaches, a handsome old centre and a strong lace-making tradition.
Look up at the Santa Clara convent above the river and follow its aqueduct, once one of the longest in Portugal, with almost a thousand arches. In the historic centre, see the Manueline parish church and the old customs house. By the river, climb aboard the replica ship of a 16th-century nau. Visit the Lace Museum to see the traditional bobbin lace, and walk to the small fort at the river mouth before heading to the beaches.
Order arroz de marisco and grilled fish by the sea. The town's sweet is pastéis de Santa Clara, from the convent tradition. Drink a Vinho Verde.
Póvoa de Varzim is next door, Porto 30 minutes away, and Barcelos about 25 minutes.
