Bragança lies in Trás-os-Montes, the remote north-east of Portugal, close to the Spanish border. It gave its name to the Braganza dynasty, and its medieval citadel, with a castle and village inside the walls, is one of the best preserved in the country. Around it, the Montesinho Natural Park protects mountains, oak woods and stone villages.
What to see
Enter the walled citadel and climb the castle keep, home to the Military Museum. Beside it stands the Domus Municipalis, a rare Romanesque civic building with a pentagonal plan.
