Braga, in the Minho region, is one of the oldest cities in Portugal and has long been its religious capital. Behind the churches you find a young, lively university city with pedestrian streets, gardens and cafés. It is under an hour from Porto.
What to see
Just outside the city, Bom Jesus do Monte is a UNESCO-listed sanctuary reached by a monumental zigzag stairway or a historic water-powered funicular. Higher up, the Sameiro Sanctuary offers wide views. In the centre, visit the Braga Cathedral, the oldest in Portugal, and the blue-tiled Raio Palace, and stroll through the Avenida Central and the Santa Barbara garden.
What to eat
