Ílhavo travel guide

Ílhavo, just south of Aveiro, is the home town of Portugal's cod fishermen, who for centuries sailed to the cold waters of Newfoundland and Greenland. Its municipality runs to the coast, with the beaches of Barra and the famous striped wooden houses of Costa Nova, and includes the village of Vista Alegre, where Portugal's finest porcelain is made.

What to see

Visit the Maritime Museum, with its aquarium of cod and the story of the White Fleet, and board the Santo André, a former cod trawler turned museum. Walk the lagoon front of Costa Nova and its colourful striped houses. Tour the Vista Alegre factory, museum and chapel. Climb the Barra lighthouse, the tallest in Portugal.

What to eat

This is the place for bacalhau (salt cod), cooked in dozens of ways. Try eel stew from the lagoon, a fish caldeirada and arroz de marisco.

Nearby

Aveiro and its canals are 10 minutes away, and Águeda about 25 minutes.

Getting there

Ílhavo is about 75 km from Porto Airport. GoToo drives you door to door at a fixed price per vehicle.
