Overview

Lagoa (Algarve) travel guide

Lagoa is a small inland town between Portimão and Albufeira, but its municipality takes in some of the most photographed coast in Europe: golden cliffs, sea caves and hidden coves. It is also the heart of Algarve wine country, with vineyards just behind the coast.

What to see

Take a boat or kayak to Benagil cave, with its round opening in the roof. Walk the Seven Hanging Valleys trail along the clifftops between Praia da Marinha and Vale Centeanes, and swim at Praia da Marinha, one of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve. In Carvoeiro, see the boardwalk to Algar Seco, a maze of eroded rock and natural pools. Ferragudo is a charming fishing village on the Arade. In Lagoa town, the São José convent hosts exhibitions.

What to eat

Try a seafood cataplana by the sea in Carvoeiro or Ferragudo, and grilled fish in the village restaurants. Visit a winery for a tasting of Lagoa wines, and end with fig and almond sweets and a glass of medronho.

Nearby

Portimão is just across the river, Silves and its red castle are 15 minutes inland, and Albufeira about 25 minutes east.
