Portimão travel guide
Portimão lies at the mouth of the River Arade in the western Algarve. It has two sides: the old riverside town, once a busy fishing and canning port, and Praia da Rocha, one of the Algarve's first and biggest resort beaches. Together they make a lively, practical base for the coast between Lagos and Albufeira.
What to see
Spend time on Praia da Rocha, a huge golden beach below ochre cliffs, and watch the sunset from the Santa Catarina Fortress. In the old town, walk the riverside promenade and visit the Portimão Museum, set in a former sardine cannery. From the marina, boats leave for the sea caves of Benagil and the coast. West of town, the Ria de Alvor is a protected lagoon with boardwalks, birds and the white fishing village of Alvor.
What to eat
Portimão is the sardine capital of the Algarve: eat them grilled by the old bridge, especially in August during the sardine festival. Try a seafood cataplana, the fishermen's massinha de peixe, clams from Alvor and octopus à lagareiro. Drink wines from nearby Lagoa and finish with medronho from the Monchique hills.
