Alvor, in the municipality of Portimão, is a pretty fishing village of narrow lanes and white houses running down to the estuary, the Ria de Alvor. The lagoon, protected by long sand dunes, is a haven for birds and shellfish, and on the ocean side lie some of the largest beaches of the western Algarve.
What to see
Wander up through the old village to the parish church, with its beautiful Manueline doorway, and the scant remains of the castle. Walk down to the waterfront and follow the boardwalk, several kilometres of wooden walkways across the dunes between the Ria de Alvor and the sea. Spend a day on Alvor beach, wide and sandy, or head to Três Irmãos beach, where the cliffs and rock stacks begin.
What to eat
The fish restaurants along the waterfront are the place for grilled sardines and fish of the day. The estuary gives excellent clams and cockles, often served in a cataplana. Finish with an Algarve sweet of figs and almonds.
