Carvoeiro is a small fishing village in the municipality of Lagoa, built around a sandy cove where boats are still pulled up onto the beach. White houses climb the hillsides on both sides, and all around are the honey-coloured cliffs, arches and caves that made this stretch of the Algarve famous.
What to see
Start on Carvoeiro beach, the heart of the village. Follow the clifftop boardwalk east to Algar Seco, a maze of eroded rocks, natural windows and rock pools. Walk the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, one of Europe's most beautiful coastal paths, past Benagil and Marinha. Enjoy the views from the Nossa Senhora da Encarnação chapel on the cliff, and swim at Vale de Centeanes, a beach framed by tall cliffs. Boat trips to the Benagil caves leave from the village beach.
