Praia Dona Ana is the image the Algarve sells the world: a deep cove of golden sand framed by honey-coloured cliffs and freestanding pinnacles, the water beneath them so clear the boats seem to float on glass.
It lies halfway between Lagos town and Ponta da Piedade, reached by stairs from the clifftop; a 2015 sand replenishment widened the beach considerably, trading a little intimacy for room to breathe even in August. Facilities run full in season — lifeguards, loungers, beach restaurant — and the rocks at either end give snorkellers their reward.
Come early or late in high summer: the cove's fame is global, and the morning light inside the frame of cliffs is the best of it.
