Lagos is a lively seaside town in the western Algarve, with a walled historic centre, a busy marina and a coastline of golden cliffs, sea stacks and hidden coves. It was an important port in the age of the Portuguese voyages, and today it mixes history, beaches and a relaxed atmosphere.
What to see
The highlight is Ponta da Piedade, a headland of arches and grottos best seen from the clifftop paths or on a small boat trip. Between town and headland lie the postcard coves of Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo. In the old town, walk the cobbled lanes inside the walls, visit the gilded Church of Santo António and stroll along the riverside avenue.
