Montemor-o-Velho lies between Coimbra and Figueira da Foz, on a hill above the flat green fields of the Mondego, where rice is grown. Its castle, with a long line of walls and towers, is one of the largest in Portugal and was a key fortress of the early kingdom. The village is also the birthplace of the explorer Fernão Mendes Pinto.
What to see
Walk the walls of the castle for wide views over the valley, and visit the church of Santa Maria da Alcáçova inside them, with Manueline columns. In the lower village, the church of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos holds the tomb of the navigator Diogo de Azambuja.
