The walls of Óbidos are among the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Portugal, and walking them is the defining experience of a visit to the town. They form a complete loop of roughly 1.5 kilometres around the historic centre, rising to around 13 metres at their highest points.
The walls connect to the castle at the northern end and are reached by several staircases from within the town. From the walkway on top, the view falls on one side over the tightly packed whitewashed houses, flower-filled streets and church towers of Óbidos, and on the other over the open countryside of the Oeste, with the Óbidos Lagoon visible in the distance.
A full circuit takes around an hour. The walk is rewarding but requires care: the path is narrow in places, the stone can be slippery, and there are no handrails along much of the route.

History & context
The fortified circuit of Óbidos took its present form in the medieval period, with the walls largely built and reinforced from the fourteenth century. They grew alongside the castle as the defensive system of the town, which belonged to the Portuguese queens for six centuries. The 1755 earthquake damaged sections of the walls and the town's older buildings, but the fortified ring survived and remains one of the most complete in the country.
