Óbidos is one of Portugal's most charming villages, about an hour north of Lisbon in the Oeste region. Its whitewashed houses with blue and yellow trim sit entirely within medieval walls, and the village was traditionally given as a wedding gift by kings to their queens. Today it is also a UNESCO City of Literature, full of bookshops in unexpected places.
What to see
Enter through the Porta da Vila, with its tiled chapel, and walk up Rua Direita to the castle. Stop at the Church of Santa Maria on the main square, then climb onto the walls for views over the rooftops and the countryside; there are no railings, so take care.
